Hi Tamar - sounds good. I just backed everything up yesterday, and am planning on upgrading over the weekend. Good tip about the plugs ins ... not all the ones I use are on that list of certain compatibility. I'll just make sure to deactivate them all before upgrading, and then cross my fingers.

At this point, I'm glad though, that I haven't seen anyone write "The upgrade destroyed my blog!".

Hey Jason,

I upgraded a bunch of blogs to the new Wordpress 2.1 Ella platform. So far, so good. I ran into a few plugin issues (I generally do smaller upgrades without deactivating as they suggest -- big mistake this time around) but I believe that I resolved that.

Try it out -- but copy the files you use currently in the event that you roll back. I don't think that will be necessary though.

heh... nothing wrong with that. In the instance of upgrading software as soon as it comes out, a little procrastination is a good thing!

Thanks for the info, webomatica. Yes, no multitasking when doing this update (like checking who is visiting your MyBlogLog communities...lol) while doing the update. I have two more to go and I'm stalling big time.

Hi matt, thanks for the info. Yeah I should wait until the weekend and after reviewing the plug in list. Sounds like I should devote full attention to it.

As for the summary view on the front page - FYI there is a field under each post that is called "optional excerpt" where you can dictate what appears in that summary view. But then again, like you, i don't know if I would do that for the front page.

Unfortunately, I wasn't giving the update my undivided attention so I screwed it up and had to download the entire WP program again. I reinstalled, added my database back in, and uploaded a new theme.

I like the WYSWIG v. Code option, the spellchecker, and the ability to place any page on top. Lots more to investigate and they made more than 550 bug fixes.

Heh. Yeah, I've got to manually come back to see if anyone has replied to my comment...it would be nice to get an email instead, as sometimes I stop checking for replies or simply forget. The notification emails are similar to the ones you get, but don't contain information like IP addresses and such.

Unless you're sure that every plugin works, don't take the plunge. Here's a list of the known plugins to be working on 2.1.

Thanks AL, looks like this weekend or next week wednesday I'll take the plunge. I just am a little more cautious with a major upgrade - what will all my comment spammers do if this blog goes down? Just kidding.

Just finished the upgrade last night. The backup of database and files took most of the time but otherwise the upgrade process was so smooth. I especially loved the 1 step upgrade script. Such an awesome software!

You should really go ahead with the upgrade. It's easy.

Hey, thanks for the input. I'll try to clean up the a tags.

Some of my plug ins are pretty important so I want to make sure they continue functioning.

Oh and following conversations? Yknow, I had no idea people wanted to follow conversations.. is this blog that interesting? :)

Oh, one more thing...may I humbly suggest the plugin Subscribe To Comments by Mark Jaquith? Sometimes, it's difficult to follow conversations here. ;)

I've upgraded. Some minor glitches (probably some of my plugins), but overall, I like it. Definitely puts more power into the hands of the admin, your readers won't see a difference.

Worth noting, Skippy stopped updating the WordPress Database Backup plugin, so someone else took it over for him...and has added scheduled backups (I have mine send the database to a Gmail account). WordPress 2.1 now has a cron-like function, so this wasn't possible on older WP, without some difficulty.

Setup a test site on your own machine, see what happens...I ended up doing that before upgrading my site, and it helped a lot (too bad I didn't catch all of the bugs that way).
