Windows Jerry Seinfeld Ad: I Don’t Get It

Started by webomatica · 10 months ago

Uh... can someone explain this ad to me? It's just... limp. Lame. Like an churro soaked in a Jamba Juice.

Bill Gates is buying shoes in a mall and Seinfeld bends some shoes, and they walk out of the mall eating churros. WTF? ... Continue reading »

  • On the plus side, Jerry Seinfeld finally got paid.
  • Based on how much Seinfeld's getting paid for these MSFT ads ($11 million?)
    - he must be laughing all the way to the bank...
  • As a longtime Mac user, I bet he feels pretty good about this.
  • Wow. I really can't figure it out, either. Are they trying once again to do something Apple would do, really, really poorly?

The ad seems centered around brand awareness, not even product awareness. Are there actually people on the planet who don't know what Microsoft is? I thought they were trying to promote Vista. You'd think there'd be at least a mention of something Vista related in there somewhere.

I assume this ad was done by a major ad firm. And I also assume they got paid close to what Seinfeld got for this. Talk about a multi-million dollar waste. Bill could have saved some more kids in Africa with that money. Seriously.
  • I think I figured it out. Microsoft is going to start selling churros, in a
    mall near you.
  • I don't think you're alone. I watched it several times at work with my colleagues and all of us were scratching our heads collectively. Then I watched it with my wife and she didn't get it either.

So I read some articles on the matter. None of the pro-MSFT explanations rang very true to me.

I went back and rewatched some fo the Mac/PC ads on Apple's site. They were short, concise, clear and funny: http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/

Oh wells...I guess we'll see what the next batch of commercials from Seinfeld have in store for us.

As an aside, I really don't agree with the choice of Seinfeld. He's been out of it for too long to have much pop culture impact. In fact, his style of humor (and I enjoyed his show very much in the 90s) seems *very* out-of-style and dated in 2008 (and the commercial borrowed heavily from his style of comedy what with the churros, showering with the shoes and other quirky details). Sacha Cohen or Chris Rock might have been better choices.

    Oh wells.
  • just another glaring example of Microsoft trying to be hip and failing miserably... I laughed at it because it was so lame.

These ads will be about as successful as the Zune! :P
  • I feel better now, I thought it was me, I don't get it at all. The choice of Seinfeld......????? May be they are trying to atract that generation.
  • Ok, the commercial is definitely un-gettable, but hey, leave Seinfeld out of this. The man is trying to make a living here! (A pretty good living, that is)

I think $11 mln is also a bit out of the ordinary. However, don't mess with Seinfeld's sense of humour. I filled many 'thirty minutes' watching Seinfeld and i don't regret a second of it :)
  • Lol wow, isn't that one of the most terrible ads ever.
Seinfeld is awesome, he shouldn't be doing this.. lol.. but i guess, if the money is right, the money is right.

    -Aidan.
