Webomatica: Movie Notes: Ten Must-Haves in Any Romantic Comedy

  • Dave · 3 years ago
This is why, for me, Audrey Hepburn's "Roman Holiday" will ALWAYS be one of the absolute greatest Romantic Comedies (can I include it in that genre?). Talk about avoiding the #10 deathtrap on your list.

As much as I love the Romantic Comedy, the cliches are tiresome. I recently saw Wedding Crashers...it was funny, but talk about ludicrous premise.

I also enjoyed The 40 Year Old Virgin b/c while it followed a lot of the above cliches. It totally went hog wild with #10 and that whole "Age of Aquarius" musical number at the end. If you're gonna go with the formula, at least rock the forumla as best you can.

Roman Holiday is one of my favorites, too. Maybe the key to an interesting Romantic Comedy is one that follows a lot of these cliches but does the opposite of some of them...

Or really follows any cliche to an extreme, so that it becomes satire!

Am I on crack or did you just categorize "casablanca" and "breakfast at tiffany's" as romantic comedies?

or are you just seeing if anyone is paying attention?

Well, yeah, Casablanca I threw in there becuse I wanted to mention Nazis. Got a little carried away there.

Breakfast at Tiffany's I think is debateable if your sense of humor is very dark.

This list is very true in terms of formula. I'm a Sandler Junkie. Drew plays is sweet and different in every movie. My fav of her's Never been kissed with that fine ass Michael Vartan

Have you seen Stranger than Fiction?

There is a good part where they try to figure out if it's a romantic comedy or a romantic tragedy.
