Webomatica: iPhone Insanity Update #4: San Francisco, Burlingame, The End

  • Ross McKillop · 2 years ago
Huh.. until this post I didn't know you lived in (or close enough by) San Fran. I miss living there (shitty health care and all).

Question - if they had the 8gb model would you have bought it? Or were you really going from Apple store to Apple store to check stuff out? I can tell from your writing you really do want one, admit it :)

Yeah I work in San Fran and live bit south - Burlingame is right up the street from us. The SF store was on my way home so it was no big deal to see what was going on, there.

Yknow - I really do want one, but I think I have some will power when it comes to these cool tech toys (I waited nearly a whole year before buying a MacBook). The price is a bit high and singing on with AT&T; is a lot ask - especially when right now our cell phone is Verizon.

But everything else about it looks really slick, and it's probably just a matter of time. Eventually when my iPod dies that may be yet another reason to consider the iPhone. I can surely come up with some other excuses...

From news reports, in Hawaii, the Apple store was (is?) the best place to get it. When the local news reported at 10pm, the store was still open, no lines and someone had just picked up an iPhone, though it wasn't stated which model.

The AT&T store I went to was near where I live and a bit deep in the suburbs. Figured not many people would be there but there was about 40-50. I was roughly in the 35 range and just before entering the store, they ran out of the 4G model. About 45 min. earlier, they ran out of the 8G. I am sad.

But relieved. If I had been able to pick one up, I don't think I would've had the willpower to hold onto it unboxed for my requisite 5-7 day wait/researching.

DaFerret thanks for the update (did you know I grew up in Hawaii) anyhow I assume you say you would wait 5 - 7 days to see if there were any big bugs that would warrant returning it? It seems over the next week we'll hear a lot more about problems and fixes from Apple.

Ah, no I didn't know you grew up in Hawaii. That's pretty awesome. I'd spout the usual "What school you went?" but it's not all that important in this day and age. :P

Yes, I was banking on the masses who've got their grubby paws on the iPhone to see if there were any deal breaking bugs.

It must have been quite an accomplishment for you to have avoided buying one. :) You sir, have more self-control than I.

Yeah seems like more reports are coming out of glitches (especially with the AT&T; activation part) which are inevitable. Adds more fuel to waiting a while.

Despite having many Apple products I still avoid getting the first version of any product - I waited a whole year before buying a MacBook because I wanted the Intel version. Likewise I waited until the Video iPod before getting that device (I was tided over with the shuffle). So I think I'll wait a while before taking the plunge with an iPhone. Already looking ahead to the full screen, WiFi enabled iPod or something like that...

Yeah, I ended up just getting a new number as no one could help me transfer mine - but AppleInsider has the problem and solution now - it's really quite dumb that AT&T and Apple didn't realize this.

Still, on day 2 LOVING the iPhone.

MG that's cool keep me posted on what's going on with your iPhone purchase (I am sure you will) - so I know when I can get off the fence and take the plunge!

OK I have to admit, after watching the detailed movie on Engadget (iPhone interface complete walkthrough) I have to admit, that thing is really cool. $600 for an 8gig model cool - no, probably not. I imagine (hope) that by the time it hits Canada the price will have dropped and the storage will be a bit higher. When those things happen, yeah I'll buy one.
